In celebration of National Wildlife Week 2024, the Department of Zoology, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, organized an educational visit to Ludhiana Zoo for the students of B.Sc. Medical. The visit was a culmination of the Skill-Based Workshop held earlier in the week, where students creatively transformed waste materials into beautiful animal sculptures and eco-friendly art pieces.
During the visit, these recycled art pieces, designed to raise awareness about the impact of waste on wildlife and the environment, and were submitted to Ludhiana Zoo for display. This initiative, in collaboration with Switch for Change, a non-governmental organization promoting environmental sustainability, aimed to instill a sense of responsibility towards wildlife conservation among students. The Principal of Khalsa College for Women, Dr. Kamaljit Grewal, praised the students for their dedication, stating, “It is heartening to see our students using their creativity and skills to contribute to such an important cause. National Wildlife Week is a crucial reminder of the responsibility we all share in protecting our environment and wildlife, and this workshop is a commendable effort in that direction.”
The In-Charge of Ludhiana Zoo, Mr. Narinder Singh also lauded the initiative, commenting, “The artwork created by the students is not only impressive but also meaningful. Their efforts in raising awareness about wildlife conservation through this recycled art are highly appreciated, and these pieces will serve as a reminder to zoo visitors of the need to reduce waste and protect our natural habitats.”Dr. Monita Dhiman, Head of the Department of Zoology, expressed pride in the students’ hard work and creativity, noting, “This workshop allowed students to merge artistic expression with environmental consciousness. It also emphasized the importance of waste management and its impact on wildlife.” Members of Switch for Change also highlighted the relevance of such initiatives, stating that workshops like these are essential in educating future generations about sustainability and the significance of reducing waste.
