Department of Physics, Khalsa College for women, Civil Lines Ludhiana, celebrated “International Day of Women and Girls in Science” on 10th February 2023 by organizing power point competition for students of various streams. The theme of the competition was ‘Women and Digital Revolution’ and ‘Women in Science for society’.The celebration’s objective is to promote women’s and girls’ active participation in science and access to it on an equal basis. Students enthusiastically participate in the activity and give their best expression of their opinions. Judges for the competition, Dr. Monica Mahajan and Mrs. Nirupama Sood grace the event. For the presentations first prize is bagged by Anjali Lourembam of BSc 2nd year, second prize is given to Natasha Khanna of BSc 3rd year while third prize is given to Ravneet Kaur of BSc 3rd year. Principal Dr.(Mrs) Mukti Gill distributed prizes and certificates to the winners and certificates to the winners.

“EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH LEGAL AWARENESS”
Legal Literacy Club of the Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana organized an “Empowering Women through Legal Awareness” seminar on 08th February 2023, Wednesday. Kashish Mittal, President of the Club and Club Coordinators, Dr. Khushdip Kaur, and Dr. Charita Mehta extended a warm welcome to the Principal Dr. Mukti Gill and the college students. The objective of the seminar was to talk about the sensitive issues to educate & empower everyone in order to uplift our society from evils like Sexual Harassment, Domestic Violence and how Lok Adalats work to provide aid to the victims. Simar Arora elaborated upon the importance of legal literacy in this contemporary world and how being legally literate and conscious helps you and others in our society. Informative PowerPoint presentations were prepared and presented by Bharti, Blessy, Gurnoor, Jhanvi, Shruti, and Tarun where they enlightened students with the necessary knowledge about the crime, its solution, along with the steps to approach the right authorities to gain legal help and justice. Club members apprised the students on the nuances which may bring out a huge difference against these issues by just taking a step further speaking up and petitioning for justice.
The session was concluded with an interactive session wherein students participated enthusiastically and raised questions for the sake of clearing their doubts & myths about the Lok Adalats and work structure, also how one can report injustice being served in their close quarters.
The Principal of the college congratulated Dr. Khushdip Kaur and Dr. Charita Mehta, Coordinators of the Legal Literacy Club on bringing such sensitive issues to light. She further urged the students to play an active role in disseminating information on the issue to the masses and provide assistance to victims.
Extension lecture on “Gynaecology disorders and Women’s Health”
Youth Red Cross (YRC) Unit of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana in collaboration with Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana organized an extension lecture on “ Gynaecology disorders and Women’s Health” by Dr. Gursimran from Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana on 01.02.2023 to make young girls aware of general gynecological disorders.
Dr. Gursimran appraised the students with the basic facts of general disorders mainly problems associated with pre-menstrual syndrome, type and features of dysmenorrhea and polycystic ovary syndrome. She also explained about the diagnosis, treatment and medication for all these types of disorders. She further added that polycystic ovary syndrome is caused due to increased level of male hormone in females. She also explained that all these types of disorders are treatable by medication, changes in diet and exercise. She stressed on the point that this syndrome is one of the leading causes of infertility and also affects the health in many other ways than just reproduction.
Lecture was followed by an interactive session. Students came up with questions and broke their initial shynesss. Their queries were answered by the expert very clearly and thoroughly.
Kcw organizes Lecture on work and legacy of Sir Isaac Pitman
Department of Office Management organized a Lecture on 1 February 2023 on the work and legacy of Sir Isaac pitman popularly known as the father of shorthand. The objective of the activity was to aware the students about the life, work, and legacy of Sir Pitman. A documentary was shown to the students on the life of Sir Isaac Pitman. He was an enthusiastic spelling reformer and adopted a phonetic system that he tried to bring into general use.
This activity enabled the 40 participants to understand Pitman shorthand, system of rapid writing based on the sounds of words (i.e., the phonetic principle) rather than on conventional spellings. The students came to know about the benefits of learning stenography. The art of stenography helps to make an accurate record of spoken words in courts, Parliament and in offices.
Ms Shaveta Arora, Trainer, Naandi Foundation (Mahindra Pride Classroom Project) motivated the students to enhance their employability skills through stenography.
Gatka- Sikh Martial Art Workshop organized at KCW
Khalsa College for women civil lines Ludhiana in collaboration with the National Gatka Association of India organized a workshop on Sikh Martial Arts on Jan. 28, 2023, in the college auditorium. Various members of the association delivered lectures on the history and origination of this unique art. A team of 12 well-trained girl players showcased their talent on the stage in the field of ‘Shastar Pardarshan’ using various historical weapons used by Sikh Gurus. The mesmerizing performance pronounced the need for women’s empowerment and self defense for girls students of this age. It was an effort by the Physical education department and Heritage Club to motivate the students to get acquainted with our rich cultural heritage.
Madam Principal Dr.(Mrs.)Mukti Gill congratulated the departments for their initiative to inculcate the cultural values in young generation of Punjab.
ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON DANCE/MOVEMENT AND MUSIC THERAPY
One day workshop on Dance/Movement and Music Therapy was organized by the Departments of Psychology and Music (vocal) of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana.
Dr. Savita Uppal, Retd. Principal, Arya College, Ludhiana was the Guest of Honour while Ms. Palak Jain Bhumbla, UNESCO-CID and Fortis certified Expressive Art and Movement Therapist was the resource person for the first session. The second resource person, Ms. Vama Oswal, a psychologist and Expressive Art based Therapist.
There were more than 80 participants for this programme who took part actively in various activity based sessions.
The first session began with an ice-breaking activity where the connection between movement and emotions was introduced. The participants were made aware of cognitive, social, emotional and physical aspects of personality. The audience was further introduced to the technique of mirroring followed by an explanation and practical implications of the same.
The second session Involved the detailed explanation of multimodal approach to therapy like visual arts, movement, music, drama, storytelling, play, poetry and writing, etc. The participants were told about movement and music followed by activities based on this context. The students were very excited as they tried various movements and activities based on different kinds of music followed by an expression of self through free writing with prompt.
The third session focused on the foundations and role of Music Therapy in dealing with emotional issues which may be distressing.
Dr. Savita Uppal gave a detailed insight into Indian Classical Music and Raga Therapy to deal with stress and the event concluded with a participative session where students and the resource person sang various musical compositions based on Raga Therapy.
The principal appreciated the efforts of the Departments of Psychology and Music (V) in arranging such an informative workshop based on experiential learning and providing a platform to the students to learn and become more effective in dealing with daily issues in life.
KCW Celebrated National Girl Child Day on Dated 24 January 2023
KCW Physical Education & Sports Department Celebrated National Girl Child Day on 24th January 2023. This program is a Part of Girl Power & Self Defence Training for girls. Mr. Narinder Kumar Martial Art Coach and Ms. Priyanka Alumini of KCW trained the college girls “How to protect the girls from negative people in anywhere.” They visited Malwa Khalsa Sen. Sec. School, Civil Lines and Khalsa Girls Sen. Sec. School, Model Gram, Ludhiana to know the girls.
Dr. Mukti Gill Principal of KCW appreciate to the Physical Education Department for the taken step for the girls and Thanked to Mr. Narinder Kumar and Ms. Priyanka and suggested to continue it.
Celebration of Republic Day (24-01-2023)
Department of Political Science, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana celebrated Republic Day on 24th January 2023. A documentary was shown to students on the life of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. He was an Indian jurist, economist, social reformer, and political leader who headed the committee drafting the constitution of India from the constituent Assembly debates, and served as Law and Justice Minister in the first cabinet of Jawaharlal Nehru. Through the documentary, students came to know about Ambedkar’s life. The objective behind celebrating the day was to aware students of the uniqueness of the Indian constitution. Despite this, the students come to know how determination and education can change the fortune of anyone. The students also learn that one should not give up on oneself even if the odds are against one.
Rally on ‘Say No to Plastic’ By NCC Cadets of Khalsa College for Women
Increasing plastic waste in the world environment is adversely affecting mother earth and humans. Due to lack of awareness, it is frequently either dumped carelessly on land, roads or in rivers. In order to reduce the plastic consumption and acquainting the young minds regarding their responsibility towards plastic pollution, a rally was organized by the NCC department of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana in collaboration with 3 Pb. Girls Bn. NCC on January 24, 2023. The campaign was undertaken under the stewardship of Col. Aman Yadav (Commanding Officer, 3 Punjab Girls Bn. NCC Ludhiana), College Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Mukti Gill and Associate NCC Officer Capt. (Dr.) Paramjeet Kaur. The aim of Rally was to join hands for Prime Minister’s Shri Narendra Modi’s National Cleanliness Campaign ‘Swatch Bharat Mission’ and to sensitize the young cadets against the harms to natural environment posed by increasing plastic usage. Girl Cadet Instructors and members of PI staff from the NCC battalion graced the occasion. Around 125 college cadets participated in the rally, in which they made the nearby residents aware regarding the ill effects of single use plastic.
The rally was jointly flagged off at Khalsa College for Women, Rani Jhansi road by college the principal. Young cadets urged the residents to stop using plastic by raising different slogans against the ill effects of plastic and the need for environment protection. They carried placards explaining the need of banning plastic and creating safe environment. Cadets sensitized the people about challenges posed by increasing volume of plastic waste in the world environment by saying in one voice “We want to live in a pollution free environment”.
College Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Mukti Gill appreciated the efforts put in by NCC department. She applauded cadets for their sincere efforts and motivated them to reduce plastic consumption in their normal lives. She added that there is a need to change people’s attitudes and behaviours towards plastic to ensure a safe and healthy future for the planet. She also briefed the cadets about creative disposal of plastic waste in the form of recycling and utilizing in building and construction sectors and making use of environment friendly materials.
Workshop conducted on “Knowing Your Personality”
Department of Psychology, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana organized a Workshop: ‘Knowing Your Personality’ aimed to identify one’s underlying personality traits and further equip them with the knowledge, ways and means to utilize these qualities in their daily, academic and future professional lives.
The workshop enabled the 30 participants to assess themselves by administering a Personality Traits Test followed by educating them on ways to work on pathways to achieve their goals by striving to understand self, find out ways of self-regulation and eventually moving towards good mental health. Tips to improve qualities essential for becoming a fully functioning individual with healthy social interactions were also imparted. Informative videos were displayed for the students to help in understanding the concept of personality and its proper application in routine life. The students were given tokens of acknowledgement of their learning in the form of badges.
The workshop received a positive response; the students were successful in identifying their personality traits followed by the proper analysis and ways to utilize this information in a productive manner.
The Principal appreciated the efforts of the Department of Psychology, in equipping the students with necessary skills to manage their personality in a healthy manner and contribute positively towards the society.
